Format Overview
Expanded is the Pokémon TCG's eternal format — every card printed since Black & White in 2011 is legal, creating a massive card pool of thousands of cards spanning over a decade of design. While Play! Pokémon has not sanctioned Premier Expanded events since pre-COVID, the format remains widely played at local League Cups, online through PTCG Live, and in community tournaments.
The format is defined by its power cards. VS Seeker lets you reuse any Supporter from the discard pile. Battle Compressor dumps 3 cards from deck to discard, enabling combos like Night March (which deals 20 damage per Night Marcher in the discard pile for 220+ total). Float Stone provides free retreat. N disrupts hands to prize count. Computer Search and Dowsing Machine ACE SPECs provide unmatched flexibility. These cards, all from the Phantom Forces/BREAKthrough era, form the backbone of nearly every Expanded deck.
The metagame features some of the fastest and most powerful strategies in TCG history. Night March can deal 220+ damage on turn 2 from a single-prize attacker. Archie's Blastoise rushes a Stage 2 into play from the discard pile on turn 1. ADP/Dragonite turns the entire game into a 3-prize affair. Mew VMAX's Fusion Strike System draws 5+ cards per turn without a Supporter. And Zoroark-GX Control systematically strips every resource from the opponent. The ban list (29+ cards) keeps the most degenerate combos in check.
Key Cards
Top Decks (10)
Regidrago VSTAR
Regidrago VSTAR's Apex Dragon attack copies any Dragon attack in the discard pile, giving it access to the most powerful Dragon attacks in the game's history. Legacy Star VSTAR Power searches out 2 cards. The deck uses Battle Compressor and Ultra Ball to rapidly dump Dragon Pokémon into the discard, then copies their attacks for massive damage. Stormy Mountains and Dragon's Wish Dragonite provide energy acceleration to power up quickly.
Night March
The most iconic Expanded deck. Joltik, Pumpkaboo, and Lampent are the Night Marchers — their Night March attack deals 20 damage for each Night Marcher in the discard pile. With Battle Compressor dumping all 12 into discard, a single-prize Joltik swings for 220+ damage. The deck is lightning-fast, often taking KOs on turn 2, and trades incredibly efficiently since opponents need 6 KOs on single-prize attackers while Night March only needs 2-3 on multi-prize targets.
Archie's Blastoise
Archie's Ace in the Hole plays Blastoise directly from the discard pile to the bench — but only if it's the last card in your hand. The deck uses Battle Compressor, Ultra Ball, and draw Supporters to empty its hand, then plays Archie's to establish Blastoise on turn 1. Blastoise's Deluge Ability attaches unlimited Water Energy from hand, enabling massive attacks from Keldeo-EX, Articuno-GX, or Kingdra-GX. A combo deck that rewards precise sequencing.
Turbo Dark
Turbo Dark leverages Dark Patch to accelerate Darkness Energy from the discard pile, powering up Darkrai-EX, Darkrai-GX, and Weavile-GX in a single turn. Dead End-GX from Darkrai-GX is an instant KO if the opponent's Active is affected by a Special Condition. Dark Patch plus Max Elixir creates explosive energy acceleration that few decks can match. The deck hits hard, fast, and consistently thanks to VS Seeker and Battle Compressor searching for the right Supporter at the right time.
Mew VMAX (Fusion Strike)
Mew VMAX's Cross Fusion Strike copies any attack from your benched Fusion Strike Pokémon. Genesect V's Fusion Strike System draws cards until you have as many as Fusion Strike Pokémon in play — often 5+ per turn without using a Supporter. This self-sustaining draw engine means the deck can play N to disrupt the opponent while still drawing a full hand through Abilities. Power Tablet adds 30 damage per copy, pushing Cross Fusion Strike into OHKO range on virtually anything.
Zoroark-GX Control
Zoroark-GX Control doesn't try to take prizes — it wins by stripping every resource from the opponent's deck until they can't attack or draw. Trade draws 2 cards per turn for free. Resource Management Oranguru shuffles 3 cards from discard back into the deck, creating an infinite loop. Team Flare Grunt, Plumeria, and Crushing Hammer remove energy. Team Skull Grunt and Peeking Red Card disrupt the hand. The deck plays the longest games in Expanded, systematically dismantling the opponent's entire game plan.
ADP Dragonite
Arceus & Dialga & Palkia-GX (ADP) uses Altered Creation-GX to make all your Pokémon take 1 extra prize per KO for the rest of the game. Combined with Dragonite V's Dragon Gale dealing 250 damage, the deck turns every KO into a 3-prize swing. Double Dragon Energy provides any type of energy for Dragon Pokémon. The game plan is simple: Altered Creation on turn 2, then swing with Dragonite for 3 prizes per KO. Win in 2 attacks.
Ceruledge ex
Ceruledge ex's Bright Flame deals 280 damage for just 2 Fire Energy — enough to OHKO most VSTAR and ex Pokémon — but discards all Fire Energy attached. Blacksmith reattaches 2 Fire Energy from the discard pile each turn, letting Ceruledge attack every turn without missing a beat. VS Seeker recycles Blacksmith infinitely. As a single-prize Stage 1 attacker hitting for 280, the prize trade is overwhelmingly favorable against multi-prize decks.
Vileplume Control
Vileplume's Ability Item Lock prevents both players from playing Item cards — devastating in a format where most decks rely on VS Seeker, Battle Compressor, Ultra Ball, and other Items for their core engine. The deck pairs Vileplume with disruption Supporters like Team Flare Grunt, Plumeria, and Lusamine (who recycles Supporters endlessly). Opponents simply cannot execute their game plan without Items, and the disruption loop ensures they never recover.
Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX
Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX's Underworld Door Ability attaches a Psychic Energy from hand to a benched Pokémon and draws 2 cards — with multiple Shadow Riders in play, that's 4-6 extra cards per turn plus energy acceleration. Max Geist deals 10 damage plus 30 for each Psychic Energy on all your Pokémon, easily reaching 300+. Dimension Valley reduces attack costs, and the deck's self-sustaining draw engine means it rarely runs out of steam. The combination of energy acceleration, card draw, and raw damage makes it a perennial Expanded threat.
