- •2023 World Championship in Yokohama, Japan — Kelley wins with Mew VMAX
Format Overview
Standard 2023 was the transitional format between the VMAX/VSTAR era and the new Pokémon ex mechanic from Scarlet & Violet. The metagame featured both generations of power cards coexisting — Mew VMAX's Fusion Strike System engine alongside new Pokémon ex like Gardevoir ex and Miraidon ex. The Lost Zone engine (Comfey/Mirage Gate) provided a versatile toolbox strategy.
Mew VMAX dominated the season despite being two years old. Genesect V's Fusion Strike System drew cards for each Fusion Strike Pokémon in play, creating unmatched consistency. Power Tablet pushed damage to OHKO thresholds. Vance Kelley won the 2023 World Championship in Yokohama with Mew VMAX, defeating Tord Reklev's Gardevoir ex in the finals.
The format also featured Lugia VSTAR/Archeops (described as 'the strongest deck by far' before Paldea Evolved released), the Lost Zone engine in multiple variants (Giratina VSTAR, pure Lost Box, Kyogre sweeper), and emerging Scarlet & Violet ex threats like Gardevoir ex and Miraidon ex. Iono from Paldea Evolved became the format's most impactful new Supporter.
Key Cards
Top Decks (10)
Mew VMAX
1st Place — 2023 World Championship (Masters)
Genesect V's Fusion Strike System draws cards for each Fusion Strike Pokémon in play. Cross Fusion Strike copies any Fusion Strike attack — typically Melodious Echo or Techno Blast. Power Tablet stacks for massive damage. Forest Seal Stone provides a VSTAR Power search. The most consistent deck in the format.
Gardevoir ex
2nd Place — 2023 World Championship (Masters)
Gardevoir ex's Psychic Embrace attaches Psychic Energy from discard to Psychic Pokémon (with 20 damage). Zacian V provides a strong single-prize attacker. Cresselia recovers energy from discard. Iono and Professor's Research provide draw support. A consistent Stage 2 deck that scales damage with energy in play.
Giratina VSTAR / Lost Zone
3rd Place — 2023 World Championship (Masters)
Comfey's Flower Selecting feeds cards into the Lost Zone. Giratina VSTAR's Lost Impact deals 280 damage — enough to OHKO any VSTAR. Star Requiem KOs anything if 10+ cards are in the Lost Zone. Mirage Gate accelerates energy from deck. Cramorant provides a single-prize attacker.
Lugia VSTAR / Archeops
8th Place — NAIC 2023 (Masters)
Lugia VSTAR's Summoning Star puts 2 Archeops directly from discard to bench. Archeops' Primal Turbo attaches 2 Special Energy from deck. Combined with Single Strike Energy and Tyranitar V, the deck hits hard. Capturing Aroma and Ultra Ball provide consistency. A powerful energy acceleration strategy.
Lost Zone Box (Kyogre)
7th Place — 2023 World Championship (Masters)
Pure Lost Zone engine without VSTAR attackers. Kyogre's Aqua Storm deals 100 to 2 benched Pokémon when 4+ energy are in the Lost Zone. Cramorant and Sableye attack for free at Lost Zone thresholds. No multi-prize liabilities — trades prizes extremely efficiently.
Miraidon ex
21st Place — 2023 World Championship (Masters)
Miraidon ex's Tandem Unit fills the bench with Lightning basics. Raichu V hits 220 with Fleet Foot acceleration. Flaaffy recovers Lightning Energy from discard each turn. Path to the Peak shuts off opposing Rule Box Abilities. Fast, aggressive deck that overwhelms with Lightning damage and consistency.
Palkia VSTAR / Chien-Pao ex
9th Place — 2023 World Championship (Masters)
Origin Forme Palkia VSTAR's Subspace Swell scales damage with benched Pokémon. Chien-Pao ex's Shivery Chill searches Water Energy. Irida tutors a Water Pokémon and an Item. Melony provides energy acceleration. Cross Switcher enables multi-prize KOs. A versatile Water deck with strong gust options.
Arceus VSTAR / Giratina VSTAR
14th Place — NAIC 2023 (Masters)
Arceus VSTAR's Trinity Nova accelerates energy to Giratina VSTAR. Giratina's Lost Impact deals 280 damage for OHKOs on VSTARs. Bibarel provides draw support. Path to the Peak shuts off opposing Rule Box Abilities. Umbreon VMAX adds a Dark-type option. A consistent two-hit KO strategy with strong disruption.
Goodra VSTAR / Lost Zone
26th Place — 2023 World Championship (Masters)
Hisuian Goodra VSTAR's Rolling Iron deals 200 and reduces incoming damage by 80 next turn. Combined with the Lost Zone engine for Mirage Gate energy acceleration. An extremely tanky strategy — opponents need over 280 effective damage to OHKO through the reduction. Sableye and Cramorant clean up as single-prize attackers.
Mew VMAX (NAIC Build)
10th Place — NAIC 2023 (Masters)
Pre-Worlds Mew VMAX build with the same core engine — Genesect V draws, Power Tablet boosts damage, Cross Fusion Strike copies attacks. This variant ran 4 Forest Seal Stone for maximum search consistency and Eiscue as a wall option. Feather Ball searches the low-HP Fusion Strike Pokémon.
