Format Overview

Standard 2024 was the Scarlet & Violet era's first full competitive season, featuring Pokémon ex (lowercase) as the primary power mechanic. The format was one of the most diverse in recent history, with Charizard ex/Pidgeot ex dominating the regular season but failing to convert at Worlds. Fernando Cifuentes shocked the world by winning with Iron Thorns ex — a Crushing Hammer control deck that virtually no one predicted.

The metagame at 2024 Worlds was defined by Regidrago VSTAR, which placed 4 copies in the Top 8. Regidrago's Legacy Star VSTAR Power copied Dragon attacks from the discard pile, giving it access to Dragapult ex's spread damage or Giratina VSTAR's 280-damage Lost Impact. Teal Mask Ogerpon ex provided universal Grass energy acceleration from the discard, appearing in multiple archetypes.

Beyond the Top 8, Gardevoir ex dominated NAIC 2024 with 6 copies in the Top 8 Masters. Charizard ex/Pidgeot ex was the most-played deck all season. Roaring Moon ex provided a fast Darkness aggro option, finishing 2nd at Worlds. Raging Bolt ex emerged as a new Ancient archetype. And Chien-Pao ex/Baxcalibur offered Water-type OHKO potential. The format rewarded both speed and creativity.

Top Decks (11)

Iron Thorns ex

1st Place — 2024 World Championship (Masters)

60 cards

Iron Thorns ex was a Crushing Hammer control deck that locked opponents out of attacking by discarding their energy. Arven searched for key Items each turn, while Judge and Iono disrupted the opponent's hand. Pokémon Catcher and Boss's Orders controlled the active slot. Cifuentes' surprise pick stunned the world — virtually no one predicted Iron Thorns ex would win Worlds.

Roaring Moon ex

2nd Place — 2024 World Championship (Masters)

60 cards

Roaring Moon ex was an Ancient-engine aggro deck that hit fast and hard. Professor Sada's Vitality drew cards and attached energy to Ancient Pokémon. Dark Patch accelerated Darkness Energy from discard. PokéStop and Trekking Shoes dug through the deck at high speed. Pecharunt ex's Binding Peck locked the opponent's active while setting up. Shiokawa's aggressive build earned the Finals berth.

Regidrago VSTAR

Top 4 — 2024 World Championship (Masters)

60 cards

Regidrago VSTAR's Legacy Star VSTAR Power copies any Dragon attack from the discard pile. With Dragapult ex and Giratina VSTAR discarded, Regidrago can use Phantom Dive for spread or Lost Impact for 280 damage. Teal Mask Ogerpon ex accelerates Grass energy from discard. Four copies of Regidrago made Top 8 — the most dominant archetype at Worlds.

Regidrago VSTAR (Worlds Build #2)

Top 8 — 2024 World Championship (Masters)

60 cards

Another Regidrago VSTAR variant in the Top 8. This build included Radiant Charizard and Hawlucha for additional damage options and Fezandipiti ex for healing. Legacy Star copies whichever Dragon attack best suits the matchup. The archetype's flexibility and power ceiling made it the defining deck of 2024 Worlds.

Raging Bolt ex / Ogerpon ex

Top 8 — 2024 World Championship (Masters)

60 cards

Raging Bolt ex's Thundering Bolt deals massive damage based on energy attached. Teal Mask Ogerpon ex recovers energy from discard. Professor Sada's Vitality draws cards and attaches energy to Ancient Pokémon. Sandy Shocks provides a single-prize Ancient attacker. The deck combined raw power with the Ancient engine's speed.

Regidrago VSTAR (Worlds Build #3)

Top 8 — 2024 World Championship (Masters)

60 cards

A third Regidrago VSTAR variant in the Top 8, showing the archetype's dominance. This build included Hisuian Goodra VSTAR for its defensive Moisture Star and Radiant Charizard for non-rule-box finishing power. Four Regidrago decks in the Top 8 made it the defining archetype of 2024 Worlds.

Charizard ex / Pidgeot ex

10th Place — 2024 World Championship (Masters)

60 cards

Charizard ex's Infernal Reign puts 3 Fire Energy from deck onto your Pokémon when it evolves. Pidgeot ex's Quick Search finds any card from deck each turn. The combination of energy acceleration and perfect consistency made this the most-played deck all season. Reklev's build featured Rabsca for extra draw and Radiant Charizard as a non-rule-box finisher.

Gardevoir ex

2nd Place — NAIC 2024 (Masters)

60 cards

Gardevoir ex's Psychic Embrace attaches Psychic Energy from discard to Psychic Pokémon, placing 20 damage on them. Multiple Gardevoir ex stack energy rapidly. Scream Tail provides a single-prize attacker. Munkidori adds Poison damage for KO math. The most represented deck at NAIC 2024 with 6 in the Top 8.

Dragapult ex / Pidgeot ex

22nd Place — NAIC 2024 (Masters)

60 cards

Dragapult ex's Phantom Dive deals 200 damage and places 6 damage counters on the opponent's bench however you like. This spread damage softens up benched Pokémon for future KOs. Pidgeot ex's Quick Search provides perfect consistency. The deck excels at taking multiple Prize cards per turn through bench snipe.

Chien-Pao ex / Baxcalibur

16th Place — 2024 World Championship (Masters)

60 cards

Chien-Pao ex's Hail Blade deals 60 damage for each Water Energy discarded from your Pokémon. Baxcalibur's Super Cold ability attaches Water Energy from hand to any Pokémon as often as you like during your turn. Irida searches a Water Pokémon and an Item. The deck OHKOs anything but needs Baxcalibur in play. This build used Bibarel for draw and Origin Forme Palkia VSTAR as an alternate attacker.

Lugia VSTAR / Archeops

14th Place — 2024 World Championship (Masters)

60 cards

Lugia VSTAR's Summoning Star VSTAR Power puts 2 Archeops directly from discard to bench. Archeops' Primal Turbo attaches 2 Special Energy from deck each turn. The deck leverages powerful Special Energy like Gift Energy, Mist Energy, and Jet Energy. Cinccino's Make Do provides consistent draw. A holdover from the VSTAR era that remained competitive at the highest level.
